A poster for an event, a large map, a floor plan or a banner for a party often arrives as a PDF sized for a large-format printer. If you only have an ordinary home or office printer, you can still print it big by splitting it across several sheets and joining them. This is called tiling or poster printing.

How tiling works

The printer enlarges the page and prints it in sections, one section per sheet, usually with a small overlap and cut marks. You trim the margins and tape or glue the sheets together.

A poster made from four A4 sheets in a two-by-two grid is roughly A2 size. Nine sheets in a three-by-three grid is close to A1.

In Adobe Acrobat Reader

The free Adobe Reader has a built-in poster option:

  1. Open the PDF and press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac).
  2. Under Page Sizing & Handling, choose Poster.
  3. Set Tile Scale (for example 200% to double the size) or let it fit.
  4. Set Overlap to around 10 mm, so you have room to align and glue.
  5. Turn on Cut marks and Labels, so each sheet shows its position.
  6. Check the preview, then print.

Other options

  • Some printer drivers include a "Poster" or "Tiling" layout in their own settings.
  • Split the PDF into sections first: crop the page into regions and print each one full size. See how to crop a PDF.
  • A print shop can print the whole thing on one large sheet, usually cheaply, if you need a clean result.

Check the image quality first

Enlarging a page enlarges everything. Vector graphics and text stay sharp at any size, but photos can become blurry. If the poster includes photos, check that they were high resolution to begin with. Zoom to 200 to 300% on screen; if the photos look soft there, they will look soft on the wall.

Assemble neatly

  1. Lay the sheets out in order using the labels.
  2. Trim the overlap from one edge of each sheet along the cut marks, leaving the overlap on the neighbouring sheet.
  3. Align carefully and glue or tape from the back.
  4. Work row by row, then join the rows.

A glue stick gives a flatter finish than tape. A long ruler and a craft knife give cleaner edges than scissors.

Save ink

Large posters with dark backgrounds use a lot of ink. If it is a draft or a one-off, consider printing in draft quality, or ask whether a lighter version exists. If the PDF prints too small or with parts missing instead, see why a PDF prints too small or cut off.

Takeaway

Use your PDF viewer's Poster or Tiling option to split the page across several sheets with overlap and cut marks, check photos are sharp enough to enlarge, then trim and glue the sheets in order. For a seamless finish, send the PDF to a print shop.
