A family recipe book is one of the most loved homemade gifts: grandma's handwritten cards, the dish everyone asks for at every gathering, a friend's famous cake. Collecting them into a PDF keeps them safe, makes them easy to share with the whole family, and lets you print a copy for the kitchen.

Collect the recipes

Ask family and friends for their favourites a few weeks before you need the book. Ask for:

  • The recipe, with quantities and steps.
  • A photo of the finished dish, if they have one.
  • One line about the dish: who made it, when it was served, why it matters.

That last line is what turns a recipe collection into a family book.

Preserve handwritten cards

Scan handwritten recipe cards rather than retyping them only. The handwriting is often what people treasure most. Scan at 300 DPI, front and back. See how to scan old photos and letters to PDF.

You can include both the scan and a typed version on the facing page, so the recipe is readable and the original is kept.

Use a consistent layout

Choose one layout and use it for every recipe:

  1. Title and who it is from.
  2. The short story line.
  3. Servings and time.
  4. Ingredients as a list.
  5. Numbered method steps.
  6. A photo.

A word processor template with these sections, one recipe per page, works well. Use at least 12 point text; recipe books are read from a counter, not held close.

Organise into sections

Group recipes by course or by family branch: starters, mains, desserts, holiday dishes. Add a contents page at the front. For a longer book, clickable bookmarks make the PDF easy to navigate on a tablet. See how to add bookmarks to a PDF.

Build the PDF

Export each section to PDF, then combine them in order with a cover and contents page. A browser tool such as Docento.app can merge and reorder pages locally. See how to combine PDF files. Add page numbers so the contents page is useful in print.

Keep the file shareable

Photos make recipe books heavy. Compress the final PDF before emailing it to relatives; see compress a PDF for email attachments. Keep an uncompressed master for printing.

Print a kitchen copy

  • Paper: 120 to 160 gsm resists splashes better than standard paper.
  • Binding: a print shop can add a spiral binding, which lies flat on the counter.
  • Double-sided: see how to print a PDF double-sided.

Takeaway

Collect recipes with a short story for each, scan handwritten cards, use one consistent layout, group into sections with a contents page, combine into one PDF with page numbers, and keep a compressed copy for sharing and a full-quality copy for print.
