Right-click and save an image from a website, and there is a good chance it arrives as a .webp file. WebP is Google's image format, now used by most large websites because it is much smaller than JPEG or PNG. It is great for the web, and awkward when you need to attach that image to a report, an application, or a PDF.
Method 1: print to PDF from a browser
Every modern browser opens WebP files.
- Drag the .webp file into a Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari window.
- Press Ctrl+P (Windows, Chromebook) or Cmd+P (Mac).
- Choose Save as PDF (or Microsoft Print to PDF) as the destination.
- Adjust margins and orientation, then save.
This works on any computer, including Chromebooks.
Method 2: Windows Photos or Paint
Windows 11 opens WebP natively.
- Open the image in Photos or Paint.
- Print with Microsoft Print to PDF.
Alternatively, in Paint choose Save as → JPEG first if a tool you use downstream needs a JPEG.
Method 3: Mac Preview
Preview opens WebP on recent macOS versions.
- Open the image in Preview.
- Choose File → Export as PDF.
To combine several images, open them all in Preview, select the thumbnails in the sidebar, and print to PDF.
Method 4: on a phone
- Android: open the image in Chrome or Google Photos, then Share → Print → Save as PDF.
- iPhone: save to Files, select the image, tap More → Create PDF.
Combining several WebP images into one PDF
Convert each image to PDF first, then merge them. A browser tool such as Docento.app can combine and reorder the pages without uploading the files. See how to combine PDF files and how to batch convert images to PDF.
Stop saving WebP in the first place
If you regularly need JPEG or PNG:
- Some browsers and extensions offer "Save image as type" to choose a format.
- Paste the image into an editor and save it in the format you want.
- Screenshot tools always save PNG or JPEG.
A note on copyright
Images on websites are usually copyrighted. Converting the file format does not change that. Use images you own, have permission for, or that are clearly licensed for reuse, and credit the source.
Image quality
WebP files from the web are often compressed and sized for screens. Printed in a PDF at full page width, they can look soft. For print, find the original high-resolution image, or keep it at a smaller size on the page. See why PDF text looks blurry for the related resolution problem.
Takeaway
The universal method is to open the WebP in a browser and print to PDF. For several images, convert each and merge. For other image formats, see how to convert HEIC to PDF and how to convert JPG to PDF.
